When billboards first appeared, they were simply a sign of their times; now they aim to become a cultural and communicative phenomenon in their own right.
Today, in an information society built on the reproduction of sophisticated communications strategies and a universal fascination with endless shrines to all that is fake, in a world of simulacra that have metastasized throughout our reality – from calculated interpersonal contacts lacking any real intimacy, to the many surrogates that have become a prerequisite for any jouissance – the billboard (originally a kind of paean to affluence) is becoming a way to brand the nostalgia-ridden search for a time when things were spontaneous, innocent and authentic.
